Airline Transport Pilot License in Dallas-Fort Worth

The Airline Transport Pilot (ATP) Certificate is the highest level of pilot certification issued by the FAA. It is required to serve as the pilot-in-command (captain) of an airline or to fly passengers or cargo under Part 121 (airline) operations. To qualify, pilots must meet strict training and experience requirements, including a minimum of 1,500 flight hours. Earning an ATP demonstrates the highest standard of skill, knowledge, and professionalism in aviation, and it is a major milestone for those pursuing a career with the airlines.

FAA Requirements for an Airline Transport Pilot (ATP) Certificate

  •  Be at least 23 years old (21 for a Restricted ATP)

  •  Hold a Commercial Pilot Certificate with an Instrument Rating

  •  Hold a valid FAA medical certificate

  •  Have a minimum of 1,500 total flight hours, including:

    • 500 hours of cross-country flight time

    • 100 hours of night flying

    • 75 hours of instrument flight time

    • 250 hours as pilot-in-command (PIC), or as PIC under supervision

  •  Complete the ATP Certification Training Program (ATP-CTP) (required before taking the knowledge test)

  •  Pass the FAA ATP Knowledge Test (written exam)

  •  Pass the ATP Practical Test (checkride) with an FAA examiner
