CFI / CFII / MEI

CERTIFIED FLIGHT INSTRUCTOR (CFI)

A CFI is a pilot who is certified by the FAA to provide flight instruction to students. CFIs teach both ground school and in-flight lessons, helping students earn their pilot certificates and ratings. They play a crucial role in shaping a student’s skills, knowledge, and safety habits.

CERTIFIED FLIGHT INSTRUCTOR - INSTRUMENT (CFII)

A CFII is a CFI who has earned an additional certification to teach instrument flying. This means they can instruct students on flying solely by reference to instruments, preparing them for the Instrument Rating (IR). CFIIs are trained to teach advanced navigation, IFR procedures, and flying in challenging weather conditions.

MULTI-ENGINE INSTRUCTOR
(MEI)

An MEI is a flight instructor certified to teach pilots how to operate multi-engine aircraft. MEIs provide instruction on handling more complex airplanes, including advanced systems, engine-out procedures, and performance techniques. This rating is essential for students pursuing advanced certifications or careers in commercial aviation.

FAA Instructor Certifications Checklist:

Certified Flight Instructor (CFI) Requirements

  • Hold a Commercial Pilot Certificate or Airline Transport Pilot Certificate (ATP)

  • Hold a current FAA medical certificate

  • Meet age and language requirements (at least 18, read/speak/write/understand English)

  • Complete CFI ground and flight training with an authorized instructor

  • Pass the CFI Knowledge Test (written exam)

  • Pass the CFI Practical Test (checkride) with an FAA Designated Pilot Examiner (DPE)​

 

Certified Flight Instructor – Instrument (CFII) Requirements

  • Hold a CFI certificate

  • Hold an Instrument Rating

  • Complete CFII ground and flight training

  • Pass the CFII Knowledge Test

  • Pass the CFII Practical Test with an FAA Designated Pilot Examiner (DPE)

 

Multi-Engine Instructor (MEI) Requirements

  • Hold a CFI certificate

  • Hold a Multi-Engine Rating

  • Complete MEI ground and flight training in a multi-engine aircraft

  • Pass the MEI Practical Test (checkride) with an FAA Designated Pilot Examiner (DPE)
